Which Mountain Bike is Right for YOU?

Mountain bikes are designed for off-road adventures, fitness and racing. All mountain bikes boast wide, knobby tires for increased stability on irregular terrain. But, there's a wide range of differences beyond this common denominator. We can help you make the right match based on your preferred riding style.

First, let’s take a quick peek into mountain biking’s history. The sport got its start in the 70s, and Trek designer and spokesperson Gary Fisher was there from the beginning. Indeed, Gary is one of the mountain biking's earliest pioneers and visionaries. (Get some fun facts about the legendary Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee here.) Back then, Gary and his friends sent heavy, modified cruiser bikes (dubbed “klunkers”) down mountain service roads and trails. These thrill-seekers in fact staged what’s widely considered the very first downhill mountain bike race: the Repack Off-Road Downhill in Fairfax in 1976.

A lot has changed since those early days of mountain biking. The sport continued to grow in popularity, and bikes have evolved rapidly. Trek has been at the forefront of this movement, continually challenging the limits of the bicycle's capability. Epicenter carries a full range of Trek mountain bikes because we believe Trek offers the very best technology, design, and value of all the brands out there. Each and every Trek mountain bike is chock full of features and details that will make your ride a blast.

Naturally, most Trek mountain bikes are designed to be versatile and perform effectively on a wide range of trails. However, to get the most enjoyment out of your bike, it’s important to consider your riding goal(s) and the type of terrain you’ll be riding on. When choosing a bike, you'll consider questions like these: Hardtail or full suspension? 29er or 27.5"? Aluminum or carbon? Slack or steep geometry? This may sound like a different language to those new to the sport. Have no fear — we can interpret, and help you learn the lingo.

So, let’s get started! How can you discover which mountain bike is right for YOU? First, let’s look at what kind of riding appeals to you.

fitness rides ON SMOOTH TO mildly RUGGED TERRAIN

TREK MARLIN, X-CALIBER

You live for speed, and aspire to ride as efficiently as you can. You like to cover a lot of ground fast, whether on smooth service roads or somewhat rough singletrack. A Trek hardtail cross country bike will fit the bill as it’s lightweight and chomping at the bit to GO.

fun RIDES on smooth to mildly rugged terrain

TREK ROSCOE, STACHE

You want to get out for some fresh air and a good time on relatively smooth singletrack or just-bumpy-enough service roads. A Trek hardtail trail bike may be your best bet. Some advanced riders even enjoy the challenge of riding a hardtail trail bike on gnarly terrain.

thrilling rides on moderately to extremely rugged singletrack

TREK FUEL EX, FULL STACHE, REMEDY, SLASH

You’re in it for epic singletrack adventures on rugged terrain. You love challenging yourself with big descents, roots and rocks, and perhaps some drops and jumps. A Trek full suspension all mountain bike is right for you. This type of bike is ideal for racing enduro.

EPIC rides WITH some pedal assist

You want to cover more ground and clean climbs you never thought possible. Electric mountain bikes give your pedaling power a boost so you can focus on fun. They even make it possible for riders with certain health considerations to experience the joy of mountain biking. Full suspension and hardtail models available.

Mountain bikes have sure come a long way from back in the 70s when Gary Fisher and the rest of the ‘Repack’ crew pointed their klunkers down mountain roads and held on for dear life. By the time I started racing downhill as a teenager, mountain bike design boasted all sorts of innovative features such as front and full suspension, geometry unique to specific riding styles, brakes that stood up to the rigors of riding challenging terrain, and so much more.

By the time we opened our first store in Aptos, I was so impressed by Trek’s leading edge technology, as well as their quality and value, that I didn’t have to think hard to decide which brand to carry. We have no doubt that you, too, will be more than satisfied with your Trek mountain bike ... no matter what style of riding you enjoy.

Trek Hardtail Trail Bikes

Stache5_22085_A_Accessory2.jpg

Hardtail bikes offer some suspension in the front fork, but have no rear shock like full suspension models. If you value the simplicity of a hardtail, but are more about playing around on the trails than covering the most ground in the least time, a Trek hardtail trail bike (say THAT five times fast!) is right for you.

Trek hardtail trail bikes are versatile and capable, and feature geometry that’s slacker and lower than their cross country counterparts. That means these bikes feel more stable on the trail, especially at higher speeds or on steep terrain. They provide a little more cushion on the trail with longer 120mm-travel forks, and plus-size tires help to absorb bumps and provide amazing traction.

Additionally, Trek hardtail trail bikes are equipped with simple, easy-to-use 1x drivetrains along with wider handlebars for added control. Most models come stock with a dropper seat post that can be lowered while riding so it’s out of the way on steep or tricky descents. All in all, these models make an excellent choice for new riders who value a confidence-inspiring ride and for more experienced riders who measure the success of their rides in smiles over miles.

Following are the models we carry in our stores, as they are the most popular for our riding region. Colors subject to availability.

This bike is all about fun and confidence. The geometry and longer-travel suspension make it easy to control your bike when you take the wrong line or ride in rough terrain, and the 1x drivetrain gives you a wide range of gears in a simple setup. Its 27.5x2.8˝ tires are wider than standard, and this extra rubber gives you more grip and stability so you can rail loose corners, clean tricky climbs, and scramble over obstacles.

Roscoe’s Alpha Gold Aluminum frame has high-end features like internal routing, which looks great and protects your cables from the elements. It’s light, easy to handle, and features Boost141 rear hub spacing that allows for more tire clearance.

The Fuel EX is in fact a full suspension trail bike for riders who want a single mountain bike that does it all. Fuel EX boasts Trek’s exclusive suspension tech. RE:aktiv damper is firm when you're pedaling, but instantly gives way to soak up bumps. Select models take this concept further with RE:aktiv with Thru Shaft, which reacts to the terrain faster than any other shock available. TREK FULL STACHE

Full Stache is a unique trail bike. This 130mm full suspension bike has wide 29x3.0 mid-fat tires that are perfect for rugged backcountry riding. Some clever engineering tucked those big tires into a nimble, pedal-friendly package to create an amazingly balanced trail bike. This bike is extra-sure-footed, built to rip through the most rugged terrain. It looks forward to long days on rough trails, and is happy to trade a few grams for incredible capability. It looks so different because, well, it’s built to tackle rides that other trail bikes simply can’t.

The core of Full Stache's unique personality is its ultra-capable 29+ tires. These big tires with low air pressure put a lot of tread on the dirt for obscene amounts of traction. All that grip really comes in handy when you're railing corners, scrambling up tricky climbs, or plowing through loose terrain.

Unlike other bikes with 29 x 3˝ tires, Full Stache features short 430mm chainstays. That means you get astonishingly agile handling for all that bigwheel momentum. How did Trek do it? By designing Full Stache specifically for 29+ tires with an elevated and shaped chainstay and a new suspension layout.

Additionally, Full Stache features 130mm of front and rear suspension travel with exclusive Trek technology like Active Braking Pivot and RE:aktiv so you can seek out bigger lines and stay in control over the most daunting terrain. Trek's Straight Shot downtube makes the Full Stache frame extra stiff without adding any weight. You'll feel more composed and confident on even the most bone-jarring terrain. Knock Block keeps the fork crown and handlebar controls from impacting the frame.
